Dad’s Blackjack Strategy

I guess I can’t really take credit for the blackjack strategies I am going to now impart to you, but since I’ll put my own little spin on things, I still stand by the title, that this is “Dad’s Blackjack Strategy”. Now, there are all different kinds of strategies that could go under the title of blackjack strategy, so I’ll explain a few here. You have the simple strategy of 1) when is it best to SPLIT, DOUBLE DOWN, or SURRENDER (if you’re allowed to, and to be honest, surrendering does not often work as an online blackjack strategy – but I digress). This first black jack strategy may seem like blackjack rules more than anything else, but it’s much more than that. The next blackjack strategy is 2) counting the cards. And the last black jack strategy is 3) memorizing a strategy card.

When to SPLIT, DOUBLE DOWN, or SURRENDER

This is the blackjack strategy that your dear old Dad is going to push for you to use the most, simply because it’s something you can learn easily. In my opinion, it’s the winning online blackjack strategy. And doesn’t Dad know best?

SPLIT: A good time to split your cards if your pairs are middle numbers (5s, 6s, 7s, 8s), and a bad time is when you have high numbers (9s, 10s, face cards). But surprisingly, the absolute best time to split is when you have a pair of aces.

DOUBLE DOWN: A good time to make a double down bet is when your hand totals 10 or 11, and (very important) the dealer has a very weak up card (something like a 4, 5, or 6).

SURRENDER: If you have a hand that totals 15 or 16, if you hit, there is a good chance you’ll bust. You should especially surrender if the dealer has a high up card (like a 10 or face card). This way, you’ll only lose half of your best. (This last suggestion isn’t always offered in online casinos).

Card Counting

This is not one of the black jack strategies I recommend doing, but it’s a strategy, and that’s why it’s on this page. The typical approach to card counting is to apply a point for each rank of a card (e.g. 1pt for 2-6, 0pts for 7-9, and -1pt for 10-A). Although there is nothing wrong with card counting (as long as it is done in your head and not with any kind of electronic device), casinos often frown upon this blackjack strategy and can exercise their right to (and often do) kick out whoever they catch card counting. Card counting can work beautifully, and you can buy books on how to master it, but this is one of the blackjack strategies that Dad will say NO to.

Memorizing a Strategy Card

This is the last strategy that I’m going to tell you about when playing blackjack. It’s also not really a favorite of mine, but if you’re interested in learning how to use a strategy card, here are a few you can check out on this page. The reason I’m not such a fan about strategy cards is that they are not a surefire way to win, and all of the work you’ll put in to learning it will just basically have you break even in the end. But others will tell you that they work brilliantly, and that’s why I’m still giving you a few strategy cards to see for yourself.

I hope you decide to use one of the black jack strategies I’ve suggested above. Playing in an online casino often takes away the intricacies that playing at a land-based casino has (like hand signals in blackjack), but you gain a lot by playing online, too. If you miss the human interaction, though, that a real casino offers you, be sure to check out Live Casinos. They’re fun for blackjack, baccarat, and also roulette!
