Blackjack Tips

There are many blackjack tips that claim to help you beat the house: books of blackjack tips, online blackjack tips, and videos with blackjack tips. But trust your dear old Dad when I tell you that there is no art or science to winning blackjack, and perhaps my most reliable blackjack tip to everyone is to ignore the blackjack myths (and many of the tips that come with them). Below are my top 5 blackjack myths to avoid.

Dad’s Blackjack Tips: Ignore the Myths!

1) Counting cards in blackjack is a definite way to win

This couldn’t be more wrong. You can’t count cards for a few hands and expect to win. You need to be following the game for a long time, and by that time, either the casino will realize what you’re doing, or you’ll have lost loads of money. Counting cards is not a surefire thing since it still remains a probability game.

2) You’ve lost so many hands, you have to start winning soon

This myth sounds a lot like the slot machine myth, that if you’ve been playing enough, you’re bound to get the jackpot. There is nothing sure in life, especially in gambling (listen to this black jack tip if nothing else). After thousands of hands, a player might come out about even (winning about 48% of the hands), but in only a few hands, or a few dozen hands, the odds can go either way.

3) If the dealer has a 9, don’t split a pair of 9’s

Some “black jack tips” are with regards to splitting, and when it’s a good time to split. But if you have 18, it’s a strong hand, but the dealer could still get 19 with a 10 or face cards. This myth is a dud because it is proven statistically that a player will loss less money if he splits a pair of 9’s instead of standing with them.

4) Taking insurance is a safe bet

Buzzzzzz! Wrong! It is actually bad to take insurance. If you get blackjack, but took insurance before, you’ll give up 13% of your profit. Insurance is only worth it if you guess the outcome 1 in 3 times correctly (which is pretty high odds). Only if you really know how to card count (which I don’t advise), take insurance.

5) You want to get as close to 21 in blackjack as possible

Although getting blackjack or 21 is the unbeatable hand in the game of blackjack, this is actually not the point of the game. The aim of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand. So, instead of hitting sometimes when your hand should beat the dealer’s up card (it’s very important to use basic blackjack strategy when deciding whether to hit or stand in blackjack), remember that your hand might still beat the dealer’s hand without getting 21!

Follow Dad’s Advice

If you follow my advice and stay away from “definite” winning blackjack tips or any of the above blackjack myths, you might find yourself winning at blackjack at the next online casino you play at!
