Roulette Game
Which roulette game is your preferred version, American Roulette or European Roulette? There are a few differences between each roulette game, and this article will go through them for you.
To start out, I have to say that I personally prefer European Roulette between the two roulette games (which is funny since I first played roulette with the US wheel and I often find I stick to my origins). My main reason for making the switch between the roulette games is that US roulette has 38 numbers (it has both 0 and 00) whereas EU roulette only has 37 numbers (it does not have 00). This simple difference is a huge change in the house advantage! The American Roulette house advantage is 5.3%, opposed to the European Roulette house advantage of 2.7%. It’s basically double!
Does the Difference Really Matter?
Something I also love about the EU roulette game is that the croupier (fancy name for a casino dealer) uses a” Rake” to sweep in all of the chips, whereas in US roulette, the dealer uses his hands. I somehow feel like using the Rake is more civilized… but that’s just me. I just like the whole experience seeing it (but not seeing my chips being swept away!).
Another difference (which took me by surprise) is that US roulette has each player playing with different colored chips, whereas EU roulette’s players all have the same color. It’s meant to make things easier for the players so they don’t have to pay attention to their chips at all times. Is this important? Not really. Does this, perhaps, show how lazy Americans are? Well, let’s not name call!
The final difference between land-based and online roulette games is that EU roulette has the option of the “en prison” rule (when the ball lands on 0), and the player can choose to use it (and either surrender half of the bet, or leave it to be played in the next game). This is always a nice option to have, and one you only have when playing European Roulette.
Online Roulette versus Land-Based
One thing I thought I’d never be a convert of was playing online roulette. Somehow, playing at an online casino didn’t seem to bother me as much, but I felt as though playing an online roulette game would lose so much when I didn’t see the dealer physically turning the wheel and dropping the ball as it spun. I felt like I would lose part of the thrill, but thankfully, online Roulette allows even the most seasoned, steadfast land-based roulette player to enjoy the game in the comfort of your own home! Playing online also allows you to get tips on how to play roulette better, which was fun to read about. And lastly, you can often play free roulette games online until you’re ready to wager real money, something you obviously can’t do at a land-based casino. So what do you prefer? American or European Roulette? Playing at a land-based casino or also playing online? Regardless of your preference, roulette is a timeless game that we can all enjoy!
